The author has received several recent inquiries regarding the number of surviving Civil War cannon in a given state. Assuming there are others with similar questions, listed below are the total number of known survivors in each American state.
In addition, the numbers of American-made Civil War cannon known to survive in 16 foreign countries are interdigitated alphabetically.
Most of the 64 cannon located in foreign countries arrived there via gift, purchase from the U.S. Government, shipwreck, or direct sales by foundries. In the case of those in Chile (Parrott rifles and Rodmans), most were sold to Peru and captured by Chile at the end of The War of the Pacific.
The totals for Pennsylvania, Virginia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and, to some extent Arkansas, Georgia and Maryland, are greatly skewed by the large number of cannon on display at battlefield parks and forts.
Generally speaking, cannon in the other states survive in proportion to the population in those states during the decades following the Civil War. Prior to 1942, these current totals would have been almost double. During the period 1868-1916, between 11,000 and 12,000 cannon were loaned or donated to various municipalities and organizations for “monumental purposes.”
About 50 percent of the cannon then mounted in various municipal parks and cemeteries were donated to World War II scrap drives.
